Creating a 'native' app from a Gomo Course Follow
'Native apps' refer to apps that can be installed and run on mobile devices and don't need an internet connection to view the content. These apps can be distributed in a number of ways from in-house distribution within an organization to making the apps publicly available through the Apple® App Store or Google® Play.
Published Gomo projects can be turned into native apps by packaging them using one of the various HTML-to-app conversion frameworks such as Adobe® PhoneGap™, which we've used successfully to turn published Gomo projects into native apps. There are two forms of PhoneGap that can be used to create apps:
- The PhoneGap framework, based on the open-source Apache Cordova™ project, is free to download and lets you create apps for iPhone® and iPad® using Apple's free Xcode® development environment or for Android® devices using the free Eclipse™ development environment. The published Gomo content can be dropped into the framework and published out as an app.
- Using the Adobe® PhoneGap™ Build cloud service, part of Adobe's Creative Cloud service. Using this service you can simply take the published Gomo content, upload it to the PhoneGap Build service and it will generate apps for multiple platforms ready for you to distribute. (Note that a Creative Cloud subscription is required, depending on whether your apps are going to be free and publicly available. There are also limitations on the size of the project you can upload to the service).
