Access the Translation Option

1. Open the Course Tree View for the course you wish to translate
2. Click the Actions button associated with the selected course.

Choose "Translate via AI" from the dropdown menu. This will open the Translation modal

• For Multi-Language Courses:
  • A list of languages configured in the course settings will be displayed.
  • Select the languages you want to translate using the checkboxes provided. You can choose to translate to more than one language. 
• For Single Language Courses:
  • A dropdown list will appear.

Select the target language to which you want the course translated.

• Duplicate Course Option:
  • You can choose to duplicate the course before applying translations. This is recommended to ensure your original content remains unchanged and the translated content provided by OpenAI will be applied to a copy of your course. 

• Translate without duplicate Option:
  • If this option is chosen the original course content will be overwritten with the translations provided by OpenAI. If the course is single language, the content and the languages setting of the course will be updated to reflect the new content. If the course is multi-language, then the content for the relevant language in the course will be updated to reflect the new content.

NOTE: This option is ONLY recommended if you are happy for your content to be overwritten. Please note this update is irreversible. 

• Confirm your selections and start the translation process.

You can either keep the modal open to monitor progress or close it. A "Translation in progress" notification will appear in the Course tree view. The course being translated will be locked preventing you from editing the course while the translation is in progress.

Key Points to Note

• Translation Scope: All text in the course, including assets, transcripts, alt text, navigation labels, and buttons, will be translated.
• Overwrite Warning: If a translation already exists, it will be overwritten. Ensure you have duplicated the course if you want to keep the original translation.
• Course Lock: The course will be locked for editing during the translation process. Any changes or new translations will be blocked until the current process is complete.
• Transactional Translation: Each asset is translated one at a time, ensuring no partial translations. If the translation of an asset fails, it will be logged, and the process will continue with the next asset.
• Language Setting Update: For single language courses, the language setting will be updated to reflect the new language.

Translation Failure

• Unlocking Course: If the translation fails, the course will be unlocked after a certain period.
• Error Report: A detailed report will be generated, listing failed assets and providing deep links to the editor for further action.
• Notifications: Toast notifications or modal updates will indicate the success or failure of the translation process.

Open AI credit/tokens : If you run out of credit or reach your budget limit set on your OpenAI account during the translation, translation for the remaining course will fail. The transitions that have been done successfully, will be completed and appear in your course. The failed ones will be reported via the email notification.

Custom Assets

• Custom assets are excluded from the automated AI translations. Ensure any such content is manually translated if necessary.

While AI translation tools absolutely can do a fantastic job at producing sophisticated eLearning translations, there’s always a case to be made for consistent human oversight. And there are plenty of specific occasions when you might want a human translator to get involved in the process—or to take over entirely. For example:

• If you’re producing eLearning content that deals with complex, technical, or highly specialized topics, an appropriately specialized human translator might be a better choice for handling translations for that content.
• If you’re putting together courses that come with ethical or sensitive connotations, you might prefer to hand over any translations to a human who can treat those topics with the careful touch they need.
• If you’re happy to let AI take care of the brunt of your translation needs, you might still want a human eye on the end result for quality assurance purposes, either as a consistent hand on the wheel or in a spot-checking capacity. The latter doesn’t necessarily require a full XLIFF export—but Gomo’s cloud-based collaboration features make it simple for human translators to dip in and out of AI-produced content as often as you see fit.

In these scenarios, you’ll want to make sure that you still have the means to pass on your content to human translators or agencies. That way, you’ll supplement the convenience of automation with the extra layer of quality and oversight that a human touch brings to the table.
